Prosperous RoundUP (11/21/14) featuring Champs reboots and updated NYC Thanksvegan options

SOME of the vegan wines & cheeses meetup in Westchester

SOME of the vegan wines & cheeses meetup in Westchester (click to enlarge)

Hi hi.

So Champs Diner (not the be confused with Champs Bakery, Champs Jr. OR the reported Champs Corner Grocery) has moved to 197 Meserole, which is around the way from Dun-Well Doughnuts and also the L train’s Montrose stop. Hooray for y’all sharing real-time intel(ligence) on these things! Just realizing with a vegan grocery, Champs could become NYC’s 2nd largest vegan empire (by number of locations). After Blossom, which seems to be near 10 now, and going past the Candle and Beyond Sushi trios. GO VEGAN NYC!

Had the great fortune of attending that vegan wine & cheese meetup at an oils & vinegar store up in Westchester; thanks SO MUCH Carmella & Carlo! Do believe this event deserves a version in the city. WHERE is such a store though? That’s vegan (friendly) and ready for a sizable crowd though?? Anyone? Soon as we have a viable venue, I can put together this special, ticketed event with cheeses from near and far!

OTHER TIDBITS

NYC has a couple new veg spots in Mint Vegan and Junie Dish. I hope to get to both this year yet. Continued thanks to Robyn and others who share such veg NYC intel I can share with all of you. If you go to both/either, let me know how you like it.

Be sure to check out Marty’s Vegan Fast Foods Autumn Fridays at Brooklyn Pop-Up Holiday Market at Bat Haus and LIC Flea both Saturdays and Sundays. Also please know Mighty Edible has vegan options at Sugar Hill Market (which happens every other Sunday).

Was tickled to see there is a LOTTA vegan going on at Bryant Park’s Winter Village. Here’s what I’ve heard about it, though yet to verify first-hand, so please let me know what’s what: New food shops include Blossom Du Jour (sandwiches, chili, baked goods, and their award winning HOT CHOCOLATE), Vegushi (all vegan sushi and miso soup), This Pie Is Nuts (mini vegan pies with nut crusts and maple syrup for sweetening), The Lucky Sailor (Belgian Fries and vegan dips), Soup of the Soul (all vegan soups), and Soocre Gourmet Handmade Candy (vegan sugar based hard candies). Returning food shops include Chimney Cakes (they switched to all vegan recipes over the offseason including vegan nutella – it can be done!!!), Big Apple Cider (hot apple cider with no added sugar), Raaka Chocolate (all vegan chocolate), and Two Tablespoons (their 100% vegan menu of chilies and stews now includes several mashed potato recipes). And, that is just the food! There are many 100% vegan non-food shops including Cliff Belts (belts, bags and wallets made from cork), Wrecords by Monkey (jewelry and other stuff made from recycled records), Lucy and Leo (vegan baby clothes), Surya Brasil (all vegan skin care and hair care products), and Bergies Super Socks (vegan socks-no wool) just to name a few. ALSO, the ice skates are non-leather. Yay!!!

NYC’s First Official Cat Cafe Opens Next Month! (And there’s a second one, owned by other folks I believe, coming into 2015.)

Vegan Drinks NYC is on hiatus as they retool for 2015. I am very excited to see what the new team will do with ‘the mothership’ 🙂

Appreciation for your sharing this e-newsletter around. It might just save some lives – animal, and human too 😉

With Warmth & Wellness, Demetrius

*Friday morning 11/14, I started excitedly writing this RoundUP a few times. Its title was uncertain, my opening was unclear. So I browser tabbed over to my email to review the latest, and find a solid something to get this going. There, I noticed a newly delivered email response to last week’s RoundUP:

“I’m unsubscribing myself from your mailing list. I am appalled by your lack of support towards events that promote veganism and your lack of support towards the animal rights community. It saddens me to see how our community is segregated by its own members. We need people that support each other within our community so we can grow stronger. Wish you luck and hope you are able to support efforts that speak about veganism.”

WTF??! I created this volunteer communication to share, support and promote veganism noting NYC vegan scene. AND actually had (and still have) an AR event listed!! This hurt my feelings HUGELY. Because this was now the second instance of someone devaluing and misrepresenting work I enjoy. While I am struggling to find peace with weird Wednesday news of a friend and community leader choosing to exit life. WHAT A WEEK! No bitterness at all though. As you might detect, there is a good deal of tenderness from feeling ‘hit’ though. And perhaps new strength from it.

Ascending RoundUP (11/7/14) featuring Vegano Italiano, La Fashionista Compassionista and Blossom Bakery’s return

IMG_7664

Sweet Potato Tiramisu by Sweet Potato Soul

Hello hello.

I continue to be encouraged by veganism’s spread across this land, and the globe otherwise, seeing oh so many developments. Locally, we have a brand new vegan fashion magazine this week in La Fashionista Compassionista.  Local shero Victoria Moran aka Main Street Vegan is on this premiere issue’s cover; check it out. We also have the Blossom empire restoring their very busy bakery’s retail storefront. Terri is stepping out with their new comfort ‘plate’, that reminds me of a May picnic leaning into July’s BBQ season. Beyond Sushi opens their third MIDTOWN location T O D A Y!

Up north in Toronto, and elsewhere, vegan businesses like Speckled Fawn Soaps and NONA Vegan Foods are crowdfunding their next phases – please support them with dollars, of course, and spreading the word also!!! (Incidentally, these crowdfunding campaigns aren’t handouts despite media sensationalism. It is so much work for one you WOULD wish it on your worst enemy, or a truly annoying family member!)

And going beyond these shores, more vegan travel tours are emerging! Isa, Miyoko, Vegan Zombies and others just returned from a Caribbean cruise. That same company will close Summer 2015 with a vegan cruise to Alaska. Closer to my desk, Vegucated’s Marisa, Fran Costigan, Jasmin & Mariann from Our Hen House and others will be part of Vegano Italiano Festival 2015. This special event is four one-week travel tours, each with its own featured vegan(s). The tour is a bit south of Naples to the Amalfi Coast and Cilento region including Pompeii and much else. This is one of my new clients/jobs. As you might imagine, I’m tickled about it. Do hope a good many of you will look at being part of it for a special summer vacation!

Speaking of Italy, kudos to Jenné (aka Sweet Potato Soul) for her excellent Italian-themed four course dinner party popup last week. I’m so behind schedule here, and I know the photos are somewhere in the Cloud. So please allow me to leave you with at least a word picture of one course she realized to great accomplishment: Sweet Potato Tiramisu! It reminds me of what LifeThyme Bakery does with an ADDED level of culinary oomph to it all! Grazzi SPS!!

TIDBITS

Advance appreciation for a good many of you participating in a survey on veganism & consumer trust, helping one of us get that much closer to their Masters 😉

Was tickled to see there is a LOTTA vegan going on at Bryant Park’s Winter Village. Here’s what I’ve heard, but haven’t been before, so you’ll have to confirm for yourselves:

Here’s a set of coupons from/for Whole Foods.

Linking to Westerly’s month flyer (which helps remind me I’ve looked at it already); this is my favorite grocery store in NYC FYI.

Reminder: get your vegan nogs NOW! This stuff was hugely bought up BEFORE December 1 last year. So it didn’t make too many appearances at holiday gatherings, etc.

And YES, of course, please DO forward this enewsletter around. It might just save some lives – animal, and human too 😉

Please send links to ALL metro area Thanksvegan menus. I’ll continue pulling those together for sharing in the next RoundUP.

Until then, Demetrius
