Well hello there. How are you?

Me? I’m a touch off bopping to various events and eats around the country, and soon globe. Tough life, right? ūüėČ

Was tickled to learn right before sitting down to write you all that May 28th is International Burger Day. And someone is hosting #veganburgerday as a sort of counterprogramming event. So get your burgers on this Thursday so it’s a #vegan inclusive day! Of course, hashtag your pics/posts if you do.

While no new veg spots have opened per your emails (or lack of them?), I’m excited to see we have a local crowdfunding campaign under way for VSPOT’s East Village expansion¬†and 2nd location! Hooray for vegan businesses growing! (NOTE: I’m not officially involved.)

Also please know Friday & Saturday brings us to¬†Manhattanhenge, the twice-annual event where the setting of the sun lines up with the grid of the city’s blocks.

Bubble RoundUP 5/21/15 – vegan cheeses, in the garden, vegan APB

Gone Pie thrills with pecan pie and much, more more

Hiya.

As noted many seasons ago, vegan cheeses are popping up E V E R Y W H E R E. So much so I created a list to keep up with them near and far! That lives publicly here. Do you know any others that I might need to add on here? Thanks!

Speaking of vegan cheeses everywhere, let’s get Miyoko’s Kitchen here in NYC stores by letting them know we want them N O W. Advice on how to do that is here.

Guessing many of you have already heard the East Village is getting a new vegan spot in¬†Avant Garden this year yet. I’m curious and excited about it. Hopefully, we will wrap 2015 with more spots than we’ve said goodbye to since a good handful are slated to open. Keep the faith and let’s see what happens.

Hey, wait a sec, what happened to the all-veg spinoff of ABC Kitchen? Did that open quietly? Get scrapped? Or…? Lemme know what you’ve read/heard about it…

I’ve been inspired by, and encouraged, that so many more chefs and cooks are offering more tasty vegan options these days. Including Chef Harold Villarosa of¬†Insurgo Project; this¬†nouveau non-profit works mostly curiously combining fine dining, multiculturalism, sustainability, education, AND the history of each¬†NYC neighborhood. Check them out to learn more!
And thanks to Plant-Based Solutions‘ David Benzaquen, I’ve enjoyed some of Harold and his peers’ astoundingly great vegan cuisine. I continue to look forward to more of it, plus learning more unique bits about NYC neighborhoods’ ethnic histories. I mention Chef Harold + Insurgo now, because there is a June 1 benefit dinner that will provide a vegan dinner upon request¬†(UWS) and this really does need more of our attention.

OK so Blythe Ann/e’s (aka Lula’s) vegan ice cream shop is open six days a week now. Their “summer” hours are Tuesdays through Thursday 3-10 pm, and Fridays through Sundays 3-11:30 pm. (They’re closed Mondays! because handmade greatness takes some time to happen, and all hard working teams need some recharge time.) Thanks in advance for let (visiting) people know about these hours AND the place is very much open for business!

Thanks Evan, and Anne for letting me know Daiya’s NY-style cheezecake is indeed in the metro at Back to the Earth in Park Slope and at least one of the Whole Foods.

Issuing a new vegan APB for NYC greater metro: Just Cookie Dough – made by the Just Mayo company. So sorry if this kicks off a new good+bad new habit for you!

Vegan San Francisco Bay Area recommendations

10951081_10152742734842543_1057462462_o

Any time someone says San Fran, I immediately think of vegan Mexican spot,¬†Gracias Madre. Affordable, organic, tasty and a cool space to boot. Doesn’t matter if they’re not vegan or talkin’ vegan, I think of Gracias Madre!

11081031_10152745591572543_1489275970897504091_n11079607_10152739312027543_564952265784576042_n

After that, there’s a cross between NYC’s¬†Sacred Chow¬†and¬†Cinnamon Snail¬†known as¬†Hella Vegan Eats. (Speaking of which, keep an eye out for a reprise of the¬†Very Vegan Sundays¬†event they anchor in case it’s happening while you are there.) This great, and creative, team has various locations throughout the week. They’re worth finding!

10356684_10152747799847543_7451022961889192940_n

A new discovery of mine this Spring is the wonderful, and lived up to the hype,¬†Timeless Coffee. That’s¬†over in Oakland. They have wonderful savory AND sweet baked items, plus their soft serve.

Speaking of the East Bay, I’m VERY eager to return and check out¬†Sanctuary Bistro,¬†Flacos¬†(Mexican with vegan options on the fried and less healthy side than Gracias), an event by much raved about chef¬†Philip Gelb as well as¬†S + M Vegan, plus the new vegan grocery¬†Republic of V.¬†Of course, if you are over there, get thee to¬†Cinnaholic, if only to see this cool concept in-person. (The rolls are quite large by the way, so one is easily a mini meal. Maybe eat half there, and the other half early the next morning. Or later that night.

For Chicago-style deep dish pizza, there is area chain¬†Patxi’s that will make it vegan. It takes a good 35+ minutes to make so don’t go starving if you order it. It’s so like I grew up with, if way less greasy (laughter). Enjoy!

There’s a lotta buzz around the pricier, new vegan sushi spot¬†Shizen back¬†in San Francisco.¬†OK that’s easily three, if not, four days of eating, so I’ll stop there ūüôā

Bon voyage!

Hooray for so many vegan authors, and books, in the world!

Hi hi.

Was quite excited to come across this headline in prepping this latest note to you all: Goodbye Styrofoam. City Schools to Serve Lunch on ‘Green’ Trays

This week in #vegan crowdfunding, it’s cheese and chocolate!¬†Always good to have more eyeballs on these campaigns for at least support them by taking a look, letting more people know, and maybe giving them a few bucks!

Returned to town earlier this week, finding myself able to attend The Shannons’ launch party for¬†Mastering The Art of Vegan Cooking. You probably know these Brooklynites, by their previous book title and sensation, Betty Goes Vegan!

Happy to see the six and half year old Lula’s/Not Lula’s ice cream shop is open SIX days a week for their “summer” hours at least 3-10 pm, with 11:30 closing time on weekends. Unclear if it’s Mondays or Tuesdays vegan NYC’s crown jewel is closed! You can¬†check back to this blog post for clarity of which day they’re closed.

Please know you can get your vegan shop on THREE times in this next week – Saturday’s Vegan Shop-Up, Sunday’s SEED : Market, and Wednesday’s new¬†Vegan Beauty Affair. Each is linked below to pages with details!

Please give a shout if you see Daiya’s NY-style cheesecake for sale in NYC / LI. ¬†

OK I’m off to preview The Good Karma Diet,¬†(local) vegan powerhouse¬†Victoria Moran‘s 12th book. Pre-order bonus still available through Monday, May 18. Book signing & launch party Wednesday May 20th, linked below.

Vegan Paris I saw

1381605_10151712404837543_1083494676_n

Back in October 2013, I was lucky enough to spend nearly two weeks in Paris. There I enjoyed reconnecting and connecting with a great number of vegans, plus attending Paris Vegan Day.

Since that time, I’ve heard Paris has a good few more spots that need to become another list and/or revisions to these. Here’s what I put together Summer 2014 that could be useful for two different vegan food crawl days, and walking off some of the calories.

Vegucated’s Paris Vegan Food Crawl (DOWN & Dirty)

Vegucated’s Paris Vegan Food Crawl (Cleaned UP)
Of the dozen spots between these two lists, I recommend going to Un Monde Vegan for goodies to enjoy while there and also to bring back to NYC! The shelf-stable and jarred tortellini were a couple finds there. Plenty of chocolates and candies. And a crazy number of vegan cheeses and meats!!!!!¬†And then hit up Le Potager du Marais for the french onion soup with the cheese top (swooning). If it’s too hot for soup, then consider Gentle Gourmet Cafe for whatever tastiness they’re serving up.
BON VOYAGE!

Hey hey.

Quick note this week. Wishing you all well in this latter Springtime.

Sorry to note yet another NYC veg spot, Tiengarden, has closed after 20 (!!) years.

Curious to hear what vegan yogurts people are enjoying these days now that Whole Soy is gone.

Do enjoy hearing about new local vegan companies (food and otherwise), so feel free to share any intel you have.
