Melty RoundUP 7/30/15 – by CHLOE and 3 Brothers Vegan Cafe open, NJ vegan food crawls, Terri deal & Pommes Frites reboot

Thin, long strips of cured eggplant reminiscent of some new veggie meat! (Southern Italy)

Ciao. I’m back from Southern Italy and Rome. What a two weeks away it was! Southern Italy was for one of my jobs – Vegano Italiano Travel Tours. And yes, life – my life certainly – and vegandom is GOOD these days! Give me a bit to pull together some select pics from the trip. In so many weeks, I’ll be nudging you to consider joining us for Vegano Italiano 2016. It truly was a wondrous visit to the countryside of Italy. Week 3 special guest, and vegan cheese queen, Miyoko Schinner wrote about it immediately upon returning home.

I’m still eager to hear about opening dates Avant Garden and more Blossom Du Jours. And certainly anything else in the greater metro area! Grazie.

Meanwhile, excited to share by CHLOE‘s opened Tuesday. The online buzz is great! You’ll find NYC’s newest vegan spot at the corner of Bleecker and MacDougal. Enjoy when you go!

And because we need more spots in Greater NYC, please help me in welcome 3 Brothers Vegan Cafe to the mix. This place will soft open TOMORROW Friday July 31. It is indeed helmed by wunderkind Jay Astafa with baking dynamo Dani. This cafe is out on Long Island in Copiague. Looks like a 20 minute walk from the same named stop on LIRR’s Babylon line. Perhaps EatUP needs go there for September Lunch Bunch?

And in a very welcome double play, Brooklyn welcomes a kung fu-themed vegan restaurant Toad Style.

Thought a good few of you would want to know about vegan-friendly Pommes Frites rebooting. They are crowdfunding now! Please check ’em out.

Was excited to learn about this site, AfroVegans.com, from an email blast.

Let me also share here five different NJ vegan food crawls. Jersey definitely has vegan(-friendly) spots! Just have to know where to go 😉

DEAL: $16 to Spend at Terri or $50 to Spend on Catering

Continued thanks for sharing NYC vegan scene intel, responses to product APBs, and all the rest for these missives I share 🙂

Happy to say work on the More Than Salad vegan iOS app continues fabulously with local vegan, avid eater, super well-traveled (45 countries!) Meetuper Dan Friedman. We are in need of a good 3-5 more Beta Testers. Would appreciate it if you would please reach out to dan@morethansalad.com if you have a iPhone or iPad, dining out semi-frequently, and take food pics. (An Android version will come in 2016, if all goes great.)

Five vegan food crawls in New Jersey

Summer 2014, I was lucky enough to get down to Asbury Park, where there are a bunch of vegan-friendly spots. Sadly, the upscale star Goldie’s is no more. Still there is plenty to eat in that immediate area and elsewhere in the state. Special thanks to Dianne and The Food Duo that helped put these lists together. Let me know about any standout places or items within.

Please check that these places’ hours, and if they’re still in business before rolling up on them. Most I have NOT been to before!

ENJOY 🙂

Roma, Day 3

Full in a particular way and really do not want to go out. There are zero eats here, and I do want to be work productive today, so out I go.

Here’s a panorama of the patio, plus a pic of the beautiful bench on it

A neighborhood main drag is quite busy even close to 10 am with hugely women and those of a certain age. The multicultural diversity is wonderful to see and makes me think of Chicago, my childhood hometown.
With this AirBnB comes a very generous inclusion of free breakfast. Alas, it didn’t include anything vegano like fruit or fruit juice. This strikes me as ironic since I’m on the actual continent once known for its continental breakfasts. So off I go to natural grocer, Natura Si.
…it would be fun to come back to this natural foods grocery store with one or more people, hit them up for meal and snack foods. Plus to buy some of the curious sounding ones to sample. Actually had I been more pro active and working some foresight, I could’ve reached out to some local vegans to do something similar.

Roman men seem to have a range of skin tones, some hip width though rarely big butts. Generally they are more lean and not necessarily short though not tall either.
The cars are often smaller coming from a USA perspective. Perhaps this is noticeable because of the roaming I’m doing and passing by more vehicles than usual at home.
Because diversity is part of what’s here, I seem to blend in quite a lot.
If I did this trip all over again, key changes = I’d sport a shorter haircut, pack (and thus buy) some linen shirts and possibly pants (though still do jeans vs. shorts – can you say mosquitos!!?!), remember to bring a US to EU outlet converter, refill snacks upon arrival when a fluent English and Italian veg person is present, AND have more Italian at the ready for coming, going, trying to chit chat, and eating vegan otherwise.

Buon RoundUP 7/23/15 – TONIGHT Reclaim Pure Food & Wine

I am quickly writing you from Vegano Italiano 2015’s Week 3 featuring vegan cheese queen Miyoko Schinner and No Meat Athlete Matt Frazier. And a fresh off the plane for Week 4 here, Fran Costigan from NYC – vegan queen of desserts.

TONIGHT there is a potluck outside Pure Food & Wine to help the dedicated workers reclaim it from extinction. And also an online petition supporting those same efforts. Thanks for review and considering participating in both.

I’m still eager to hear about By Chloe‘s opening date to share it with the rest of the folks here, and elsewhere. Likewise for Avant Garden and Blossom Du Jours. And certainly anything else! Grazie

Please know I’m thoroughly enjoying my job marketing, shaping and otherwise collaborating on the More Than Salad vegan iOS app. It’s free with our latest update on iTunes NOW. Grubby RoundUP 7/9/15 – vegan Smorgasburg, Vegan Shop-Up, raw food potluck

600_437464048

Vegan vendors at the renowned Smorgasburg Market

Enjoyed a great time on a recent Saturday grazing through the multiple vegan vendors at Smorgasburg: Alchemy CreameryBunna Cafe (Ethiopian), Chickpea & OliveMonk’s Meats and The Regal Vegan! (Some vendors are cash only!) There is also the very very new addition of the all-vegan NüBurger – haven’t had the pleasure of eating their work myself.

Besides these all vegan mainstays, plenty of  vegan-friendly vendors there like 3 Nuts with some dessert options. The all-veg Bombay Sandwich Co. with some great flavors and whole food items. There’s also People’s Pops, Kelvin Slush Co., Brooklyn Soda Works, a french fries maker with many vegan dipping options, and Gustavo’s Salsa. Plus a good few omnivorous vendors do offer a vegan something or other. (Be sure to ask them about all the ingredients as some still need practice at what vegan is AND is not.)

As noted many seasons ago, vegan cheeses are popping up everywhere! So much so I needed a list to keep up with them, which I’ve created publicly here. Do you know any others that I might need to add to it?

CONGRATS to Seasoned Vegan for the wonderful review in the latest Village Voice.

Was hoping to do a meal + meetup to see this new movie – Do I Sound Gay? Alas, it’s screening THIS weekend before my big trip to Italy. Meanwhile, I encourage you all to go see it, and let others know about it. Indie film is even more important these days!

Eager to hear about By Chloe‘s opening date. Likewise for Avant Garden and Blossom Du Jours. And certainly anything else!

Proud RoundUP 7/2/15 – Superiority Burger, 3 Brothers Vegan Cafe

 IMG_8616

Two scoops of Chloe’s Soft Serve Fruit over a vegan waffle!

Hi!

A bit surprised we are already mid-year. 2014 was sooooooo marvelously slow for me early on that it seemed like at least three years compacted into one. This one feels like a treadmill that keeps on going, going, slows, going, going… As an astrologer, I might say the challenge of the year for many is about speed. More on that, another week.

This week I’m tickled about the SCOTUS decision affirming gay marriage. As well, THE strong buzz around the all-veg Superiority Burger with mostly vegan options. (Check hours before going!). SB is in the old Dirt Candy space. AND there is the forthcoming 3 Brothers Vegan Cafe on Long Island. (Sorry, did you think Manhattan or BK? Even Queens? Let us all be so lucky!)

Glad to see NÜBurger (one of the Vegan Shop-Up vendors) added to Smorgasburg’s lineup. More about vegan Smorgasburg next time.

Lastly for this time, please note Candle 79‘s new summer menu.

DEAL: Rockin’ Raw
